Childbearing 04:32
CHILDBEARING By David Poe © 2002 Charming Martyr Music (BMI.) On a rainy street, I caught this scene: Pretty little girl splashing puddles with her feet. She was singing a song, so headstrong, Looked like her mom who stood nearby. Then she started to cry, For no reason at all -- Or maybe for something she'd already lost -- And suddenly I knew the reason why Girls will cry Like you do Just then a little boy, Dressed up in corduroy, He stopped to stare at that little girl there. They were around the same age, Mothers wore the same shoes, Girl's tears turn to rage now the boy was crying too. Looking over my shoulder, Because I've been there before. Now I'm feeling older and I don't look anymore. That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday. That little girl is going to break that little boy. Someday, Someday. Man and wife, old friends of mine, Asked me for a light outside the show last night. She said 'Lets get high, like old times,' She twisted a J but then he walked away. She said 'I love him still,' Like she needed to explain. But when he reappeared he said “We can't stay. ‘Cause the babysitter's home, and now it's getting late, I get tested at my job and I don't approve anyway.' That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday. That little girl is going to break that little boy. Someday, Someday. If you and me decide to be a child-bearing family, Would you marry me, Have a home, Plant the tree, paint the nursery? In a couple of years (or maybe ten) Honey you know I can't foresee when. We might settle down, In some small town, And leave behind this life. People smile at a weeping child, Because you know their sadness is going to pass, And the years will bring, Some real thing to cry about. That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday. That little girl is going to break that little boy's heart someday. That little boy is going to break that little girl. Someday Someday Someday Someday Some night Someday

THE DRIFTER by David Poe © 2004 Charming Martyr/BMI. You took me like a drifter takes a friend I'll never be that honest again When it seems like nothing's going to change Then your world comes crashing down Uh-huh Your friends accommodate your darker phase Then you find it's been 100 days When's the last time you remember feeling safe You're surrounded by assassins in this place But you wanted to be here and I'm amazed If I appear in every story that you tell, that you tell How can you say that I don't know you well Wasn't I the one who caught you when you fell, when you fell How can you say that I don't treat you well When I'm ringing out your name like a bell, like a bell How can you say that I don't wish you well? I wish you well You get that lonely feeling at the door Even though you've left this place before 'Cause the truth is you won't care anyore Till your world is crashing down ... If I appear in every story that you tell, that you tell How can you say that I don't know you well Wasn't I the one who caught you when you fell, when you fell How can you say that I don't treat you well When I'm ringing out your name like a bell, like a bell How can you say that I don't wish you well? I wish you well

LOVE WON'T LAST THE AFTERNOON By David Poe © 2002 Charming Martyr Music (BMI.) In a dark room Where you shot your last roll Color blurs And honey, can't you see How you drove me from your dark room Into hers So little tragedy we have rehearsed Every morning I wake up there Feeling worse But it's ending soon Love won't last the afternoon In a strange bed Where I'm laid out like a man In a hearse And she comes to me Because she believes it's not too late For a nurse While she's licking all my wounds I dare not move Like there's still some old fidelity to prove Or something more to ruin Love won't last the afternoon But please don't wake me yet From my bad little dream I'm a king with all my prophets But I don't want to go to sleep 'Cause when I tell them what I see They're gonna tell me what it means And I don't want to know How you do on your own In the back of some car Could you drop me down the road A hundred blocks or so And please forgive me I haven't welcomed any morning Since I left her home When you take a face And head into a day And from a speeding window watch the sky turn grey And hide the moon Love won't last the afternoon
